June E-News: Organic Stone Fruit Jubilee & Hiking for Food Miles

The most delicious event of the Central Valley is almost upon us--the annual Organic Stone Fruit Jubilee! There is no better way to embrace the summer than by eating juicy, ripe, drip-down-your-cheek stone fruit, and you will find no shortage of it at the jubilee this coming Saturday, June 20th from 5:00 - 8:30pm in Clovis, CA. Sample and bring home over 60 varieties of organic peaches, plums, nectarines, pluots, and apricots, and spend your evening enjoying several other activities as well such as farm tours, jam making, a kids craft corner, a Japanese tea ceremony, flower arranging, food trucks, artisan pies and more.

EcoFarm will be there and posting to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using #StoneFruitJubilee, so if you can't join us in person, follow along virtually! For more information and details on this celebration of ecological food and farming, visit www.fruitjubilee.org.

Hiking the Distance to Reduce Food Miles & Benefit EcoFarm

Cauri Hammer, a recent graduate of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo involved with the Cal Poly Center for Sustainability is gearing up to set off on an amazing journey, and we'd like to share her story! Cauri was inspired by her experience at the 2015 EcoFarm Conference, and decided that post-graduation she wanted to do something that would raise awareness about local food and farming systems as well as give back to the Ecological Farming Association. In late July, Cauri will be hiking 200 miles of the John Muir Trail that runs from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney, creating all of her backpacking meals using locally sourced foods while also collecting pledges to support EcoFarm.

Through this challenge, Cauri aims to raise awareness about the benefits of eating locally by collecting all the items for her meals from around Marin and Sonoma. As she will burn upwards of 1,500 calories a day on the trail, it is important that she have healthy, nourishing, and substantial meals along the way and she'd like to show that meals made from local fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, and meats will get the job done.

Visit Cauri's Crowdrise fundraising page for more background on her story as well as the opportunity to make a donation. The Ecological Farming Association is honored to have such an inventive and determined young woman in our community and we can't wait to follow along throughout the rest of her journey!
