The role of the Development and Grant Specialist is to raise funds for Saba Grocers by
researching and identifying funding sources and developing and administering
fundraising strategies and activities, focused on opportunities from foundations,
government grants, grassroots fundraising, and businesses. The Specialist will
research and identify new grant opportunities and prospects; develop and write grant
proposals, funder reports, grant spending, and other communications in collaboration
with staff and and consultants; cultivate, solicit, and steward funders and prospective
funders; assist in developing development outreach materials; and help organize related
fundraising events and funder convenings.
Salary and Benefits:
The salary range for this position is $85,000-$95,000, commensurate with experience.

Hours of operations: 8am-5pm.
Location: In–office position with possibility of hybrid (2 days at home) based on
performance evaluation
● Helps to plan, develop and implement fundraising strategy for Saba’s projects
and programs, in collaboration with staff and members
● Conducts research and identifies prospective funders, with a focus on
foundations, government grants, grassroots fundraising campaigns, businesses,
and others as needed
● Prepares grant proposals, applications, budgets, and reports from writing to
submittal and/or reviews and edits such proposals and reports
● Provides analysis and information on fundraising prospects
● Maintains reports and tracking on fundraising progress, prospects, and contacts
with funders, focused on foundations, government and business sources
(including a grants and reporting calendar)
● Coordinates closely with the Executive Director and Board officers in planning
fundraising events or other special projects related to fundraising and
donor/foundation relations.
● Participates in short and long-range strategic planning
● Assists in the development of marketing materials and information about Saba
for fundraising activities and events including a funder convening
● Designs and implements an annual grassroots/individual donor fundraising
campaign
● Responsible for assessing and implementing development department growth
trajectory including building staff capacity as needed, and
selection/implementation of technology tools
Required Qualifications:
● Thorough working knowledge and understanding of and at least five years of
experience in fundraising, grant writing, foundation/donor relations, and/or
philanthropic principles, techniques, procedures, strategy and practices.
● Experience in writing successful grant proposals and funder reports.
● Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills to interact with
potential funders and build and maintain effective working relationships with a
diverse group of stakeholders, including potential future direct-reports.
● Thorough analytical, critical thinking and project management skills.
● Knowledge of and work or volunteer experience in food and agriculture systems
and some familiarity with funders in this field.
● Familiarity with database system(s) such as Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, or other
platforms for tracking and outreach with contacts. Familiarity with online grant
portals preferred.
● Must be comfortable with working in a young and growing organization
● Proactive and have the ability to initiate and establish systems and policies
needed for fundraising
● Creative and quick thinker
● Position requires ability to drive and a valid driver’s license.
Education/Training:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field and at least five years of professional experience in
fundraising, development, grant writing or related field.
