Job Description: 

We’re looking for an experienced individual with passion and drive to catalyze a robust, resilient, and regenerative food
system that prioritizes local agricultural production, equitable access to healthy food, and ecological sustainability. As the
title of the role implies, the ideal candidate has the ability to lead in all aspects of our regenerative fruit and vegetable
production enterprise while training and educating others about our food system, hunger, sustainable agriculture and
environmental care. Equal focus on and attention to both the soil and people is imperative.
Our team needs someone who enjoys having their hands in the dirt doing the day-to-day work of managing a profitable
fruit and produce production enterprise to supply our community with nutritious sustainably grown local food (via
Farmer’s Market, CSA, Produce Prescription Program, etc.). This position also spearheads the education of our
community, volunteers, WHRI interns, and field trips on the importance and techniques of sustainable agricultural
production. As an educational farm, our goal is to model sustainable methods and practices that can be replicated in any
community around the world. We’re looking for a team player competent in horticulture, retail, management, and
education so they can be successful in this role as they live out our values of advocacy, care, and education. This position
requires: a willingness to adapt to change, flexibility with work hours due to unpredictable seasonal needs, an ability to
work in a fast-paced and physically demanding environment dependent on fluctuating seasonal factors, and the
temperament to work in both a team environment and independently.

Duties & Responsibilities: 

We are Caretakers:
Actively work to improve soil health, maintain ecosystem services, increase ecosystem diversity and create space for other beings and life to flourish on-farm, etc.
Oversee and animate all aspects of a profitable, regenerative, beautiful vegetable,fruit, value-added production enterprise:
Field work: bed making/maintenance, BCS tractor work, amendment application, seed/transplant, fertilize/side-dress, mulch, cultivate, mow/weed whack, prune/trellis, prioritize low-till strategies, procure supplies
Integrated Pest Management: improve soil health and biodiversity through preventative methods, e.g. foliar spray, side-dressing, row cover, trap crops, hand-picking pests, and OMRI-certified sprays as a last resort
Install and maintain drip irrigation, including repairs
BCS tractor implements and maintenance (reports needs/issues to Education Director)
Maintains field tool inventory
Oversee greenhouse operations
Supply ordering
Seeding & potting up
Watering & fertilization
Environment and pest/disease control, e.g. damping off
Crop Planning
Utilize and maintain Market Garden Planning tool (works w/Education Director to determine produce projections for CSA, Farmers Market, NOTF, PRx Program)
Selects produce varieties, succession planning, direct seeding/transplant determinations
Places & monitors seed orders
Produce harvest & processing
Determine pricing, volume, and packaging
Quality control
Supply order
Upkeep gardens and facilities
Maintain cleanliness and organization of garden shed, processing shed, walk-in coolers
Maintain aesthetic
Report issues to Education Director
Oversee all aspects of the retail and wholesale markets
Customer communication and marketing (works w/ Education Director & Executive Assistant)
CSA program, Farmers Market, Wholesale, and custom orders
Plan, maintain, & execute value-added goods
Train staff on and schedule weekly farmers market to ensure coverage
Determine and communicate preferred retail display to staff
Maintain product inventory via Square and track sales
Maintain documentation and record keeping for internal use, certifications, and compliance
Provide for and oversee Produce Prescription Program (in conjunction with Education Director):
Coordinate with Compost Program Coordinator/s on overlapping projects
Determine labor needs for field production and retail duties (w/support from Education Director)
Generate quality content for marketing of products and services.
Participate in administrative meetings
Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Seek out input from marginalized voices and differing perspectives and espouse practices in our work that facilitate a just, equitable, and sustainable food system

Educate, instruct, and inspire farm staff, interns, volunteers, and clients in the realm of sustainable agricultural production, hunger alleviation, and food justice.
Participate in community outreach and education (in conjunction with Education Director)
On-farm education
Community education (e.g., farmers market educational booth, off-farm education, social media)
Train, educate, task, and supervise field / harvest team: volunteers, interns, garden crew, etc.
Stay up to date on best practices, research, sustainable/regenerative methods, attend relevant trainings and conferences, etc. and passing along knowledge and skills to others
Generate quality content for education about sustainable agricultural practices.

Education & Experience: 

Education:
Minimum Required: High School Diploma/GED
Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree

Experience:
Minimum Required: 1 year of relevant work is required
Preferred: 3+ years of relevant work
