Winona LaDuke (Anishinaabe) is an internationally renowned activist, author, and orator working on issues of climate change, renewable energy, sustainable development, food systems, and environmental justice. LaDuke is founder and Co-Director of Honor the Earth, a national advocacy group that encourages public support and funding for native environmental groups. A graduate of Harvard and Antioch Universities with advanced degrees in rural economic development, LaDuke advocates restoring systems that have long been considered sacred. "Food for us comes from our relatives, whether they have wings or fins or roots. That is how we consider food. Food has a culture. It has a history. It has a story. It has relationships. We are at this point, known in prophecies as the time of the 7th fire, where we have a choice. This is a choice between a well-worn, scorched path and a new, green path. It is time to find our courage, do the right thing, and change consciousness."
John Ikerd is Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics at University of Missouri, Columbia, where he received his BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in agricultural economics. He was raised on a small dairy farm in southwest Missouri. In 2014, Ikerd was commissioned by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations to write the regional report, “Family Farms of North America,” in recognition for the International Year of the Family Farming. Ikerd is the author of several books, spending most of his time writing and speaking on sustainability issues with an emphasis on agriculture and economics.
Doria Robinson is a 3rd generation resident of Richmond, California and the Executive Director of Urban Tilth, helping the Richmond community build a more sustainable, healthy, and just food system through urban agriculture. Formally trained as a Watershed Restoration Ecologist, she is certified as a Permaculture Designer, Bay Friendly Gardener, Nutrition Educator, Yoga Instructor, and the founder of Richmond’s first and only yoga and meditation center. Doria was recognized as Environmental Advocate of the Year, Woman of the Year for Contra Costa County, and awarded the Community Resiliency Leadership Award from Bay Localize. Doria explores her work from the perspective that physical, social and economic health is dependent upon ecological health - the restoration of one depends on the restoration of the other.
