All small and mid-sized growers want to distinguish their crops from the mass market. Choosing special varieties is a challenge, however, because catalogs and nurserymen promote the selling points of their varieties without disclosing their shortcomings. Unusual fruit varieties provide unique opportunities for direct-market growers to shine, but not much is known about their adaptation and disease resistance.
