This business skills session will provide a framework for understanding what you need from your farm or ranch record-keeping systems. We will look at the various financial and non financial records small farms need to keep. We will discuss the different purposes your accounting system must serve and the most efficient ways to meet all your needs without creating unnecessary complexity. We will also discuss type of records needed to manage production, profitability, labor, FSMA, etc. and the role of a bookkeeper, the role of an accountant, and the role of an income tax preparer. This session is for beginning farmers and farmers who have been in business a few years and have questions about how to improve their financial records and financial analysis.
