Federal law, the Food Safety Modernization Act, now dictates how on-farm compost is to be made. Several California state agencies also have recently completed new regulations governing compost making. These regulations do not align. In particular, farmers may face spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to comply with water board requirements, and the state may miss an opportunity to use dairy manure productively, reducing its pathogen load. This session will explain the new regulations and the need for farmers to push back against regulators. It will include two organic farmers who currently make compost.
