Keeping the orchard floor covered with native vegetation or a cover crop is key to promoting soil health, water infiltration, and above and below ground biodiversity. This panel will discuss how vineyard, fruit, and nut-tree farmers can effectively manage the orchard floor to promote soil quality and environmental benefits, while also managing harvest and complying with food safety. Carbon sequestration on broad under-utilized acreage is seen as a big plus for climate correction. Novel approaches such as above-ground drip tape for irrigation, different types of cover-crop combinations for bees and nutrients, and other techniques will be discussed.
