Racism is Killing the Planet: Centering Racial Equity in Activism and Policy

In a 2020 article by this same title, Hop Hopkins explains, “You can’t have climate change without sacrifice zones, and you can’t have sacrifice zones without disposable people, and you can't have disposable people without racism.” The understanding that uprooting white supremacy is key to attaining environmental sustainability goals is not new but it is gaining traction. Hop Hopkins of Sierra Club will share historical context in the US as well as his current work. Julia Jordan of the Leadership Counsel for Justice & Accountability will give an overview of environmental justice issues in California's Central and Coachella valleys, where agriculture and other industries are disproportionately affecting the drinking water, air quality, and as a result, the health and wellness of marginalized Latinx communities. Julia will outline the policies the Counsel is advocating to secure equal access to opportunity, regardless of wealth, race, income, and place.
