Over a decade ago, a progressive Illinois no-till row-crop farmer began adapting Midwestern regenerative soil management practices to specialty crops in California's San Joaquin Valley. Today Monte Bottens and his team of consulting agronomists at California Ag Solutions have almond growers seeding winter cover crops, applying compost, and grazing sheep in some orchards. Such practices enliven soil microbiomes, build water-holding capacity, and effectively cycle nutrients to an extent that allows orchardists to drastically reduce synthetic chemical inputs. Though not necessarily pursuing Certified Organic status, this grower community will share biological solutions to perennial problems that can well inform any orchardist.
