Poultry farmer Caleb Barron will present his experience and challenges raising pastured chickens for eggs and meat. He uses methods “beyond organic standards,” with the goal of providing the highest quality, best tasting, most nutritious food possible. He will discuss business planning, housing design, feed and water, pasture management, predators, disease prevention, egg handling and meat processing regulations, and recordkeeping. He markets via farmers markets, a chicken-share CSA, and to restaurants. They will be joined by veterinarian/ engineer Todd Kelman, who will discuss small-scale coop design, spotting little problems before they become big problems, responding to increased mortality, and gaining state diagnostic laboratory assistance.
