John Ikerd’s essay, “Restoring Integrity to the Food System” in his book Small Farms Are Real Farms, talks about farmers working together for their mutual benefit – cooperating, if not forming legal cooperatives – so they can overcome issues of supply and quality, and so they don't fall back into business as usual, cutting each other's throats with competition. This cooperation is what Hank Herrera and Doria Robinson are implementing in Richmond. We'll explore the possibilities of small, regional distribution systems that support not only farmers but also nearby communities, including those frequently excluded by the mainstream.
