Hospitals, clinics and other healthcare venues have enormous potential for promoting organic and local food. As more health practitioners become aware of the consequences of diet, many want to offer alternatives that will improve their patients' health and promote a healthier environment. Examples include farmers markets and CSAs in hospitals and clinics; hospitals buying directly from local farmers for their food services; "vegetable prescriptions”; and the new California Food Is Medicine program. This workshop will show inspiring examples of partnerships between health care professionals and organic food producers. Ben Thomas is senior program manager for CAFF's Farm to Cafeteria program. Luis Vargas is procurement manager of Food and Nutrition Services at UCSF Medical Center.
