Consumers and farmers are recognizing the benefits of organic, pasture-raised poultry for animal welfare, the environment, and human health. As demand rises for organic poultry, challenges to sustainable, appropriately scaled systems become increasingly apparent. This panel explores practical issues for the development of a humane, organic poultry industry. Topics include strategies to promote animal well-being, including nutrition, reducing flock stress, incentivized access to healthy pastures, breeding for immunity rather than growth, and hatchery management for healthy chicks that thrive in pasture systems. We will demystify market labels, identifying those with authentically high standards based upon demonstrated humane practices.
